Did you already select one or more potential niches for your successful blog? Don't think too long, just write down few of the possible ideas. You'll run some test on them before investing time and efforts into any niche. So there is nothing to lose at this point.
Now let's assume you are considering writing a blog about Golf. Let us explore this niche deeper. I'll use Golf as an example, but you should perform the same benchmarks on any other potential topic.
Keyword TestGo to
WordTracker. For now you can use the free version. Once you start working more seriously on your blog or creating other money making blogs, you'd better get the full version.
Type in "Golf". At the moment of writing this I see 8631 searches. This is very good! I would be willing to create a blog even if there were only few hundred searches. But you must now check if there isn't too much competition on this topic:
Google TestGo to
Google and type Golf. I got 344,000,000 results! That means a huge competition. Generally I aim for the following: when I divide the number of searches received from Wordtracker on the number of Google results (by the exact key phrase, put in quotes) it should be hugher than 0.01. The result here is much lower, so we deal with enormous competition.
This is not a hard rule, sometimes less than 0.01 could be also fine, but not so much less. Also this test is a bit too broad. It means only that 344 millions of results contain "Golf". It does not mean that Gold is the main topic of these sites. But even this rough test gives some initial ideas.
Now you have too choices - skip this topic and go to the next from your list or try to narrow the topic. In both cases you go to step 1 again - Wordtracker. Let's see how we can narrow the topic.
"golf clubs" has 5112 searches and the Google results are much less - 2,050,000. The ratio is 0.0025. It's still low, but much better. Additionally aiming a more narrow topic will give you a lot of advantages - more relevant visitors from search engines, more relevant ads and higher conversions.
But let's see what to do now. You can decide 0.0025 is not so bad and continue further with the Google test. Or you can decide to check the other keyword phrases suggested by Wordtracker. Of course before doing any calculations think if you can write about any specific narower topic. For example "golf balls" could sound good as figures, but can you write an entire blog just about golf balls? Now, let's search for some other appropriate topic:
"naked golf" gives ratio of 0.04 - an excellent one if you feel comfortable building such a blog!
"jamaica golf" gives 0.037 - also not bad.
And so on, you can check all the keywords. Just don't take it as a hard rule and don't think your blog should fix on only one of these topics / keyword combinations. It makes much more sense to select a combination of several related topics as long as you can unite them under the more general topic of your blog. The sub-topics can then become categories of your blog.
But let's assume you have selected "golf clubs" as a general topic of your blog. It's not a bad choice. There are a lot of seraches and the searches/results ratio is not so bad. Your categories can be "used golf clubs", "discount golf clubs", "cheap golf clubs", "custom golf clubs" etc (again they come from the search results given by Wordtracker).
There is another test you need to perform now. As I told you, the ratio we calculated above gives you only a very basic idea about the competition. Now open Google and type "golf clubs" without the quotes. One by one check all the results on the first page. What is their Google PR and Alexa rank?
If all the results have PR 5 or above and Alexa 100,000 or below, your task will be very hard. This means the results are very well marketed and SEO-ed and your chances to appear on the first page of search results are low.
If most the results have PR 4 or below and Alexa above 100,000, you have selected a great topic.
With "golf clubs" the situation is in the middle. It's not the perfect topic, but there is good chance to achieve great placement. It's probably worth the effort.
Check the sub topics in the same way. If most of them can be considered good, then the general topic wins. Otherwise you can reconsider.
Adsense TestWhen running a blog,
Adsense will probably be one of the monetization methods you will use. You should ensure there are well paid related keywords that people bid on. Go to
Google Keyword Tool and type "golf clubs". Select "Cost and ad position estimates". You'll see that estimated cost per click (CPC) for "golf clubs" is 1.23. That is not bad! it means there are advertisers who compete for such high prices.
Check also the related keywords and ensure there is money in them too. With "golf clubs" you are ready to go.
Affiliate Programs TestGoogle Adsense should not be your only source of income. You should always diversify. But we will cover these topics deeper into the later lessons. For now all you need to know is that there should be some affiliate programs available for your topic if you want to make money from it.
Go to Google and type "golf clubs" + affiliate program. Do you find a lot of results? Do they offer you to promote something and earn good (and if possible REOCURRING) comissions? If yes, you are on the right track!
Don't sign up for any programs yet, only check.
Forums TestThe forums are one of the channels you will use to promote your blog. Go to Google (oh, well, if you have another favorite engine, you can use it too) and type "golf clubs discussion board" or "golf clubs discussion forum". Any results? Check also just "golf discussion forum". There are plenty of forums which will appear. This means there are people who are interested in the topic. It means also you'll be able to promote your blog in forums.
This is all you need. You have selected a winner!
